WAPA tasks women on healthy nutritional values

Mrs Bolaji Dada, the Lagos State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA), has tasked women to inculcate healthy nutritional values for the wellbeing of their family.

Dada who spoke at a nutrition programme organised for women at the Ifelodun Local Council Development Area (LCDA), in Ajegunle on Tuesday noted that a healthy nation starts with a healthy family.

According to her, the ministry started the programme in 2021 to reachout to women and educate them on the benefits of healthy nutrition.

“The Lagos State Government has decided to reach out to women through WAPA to educate them on good nutritional food.

“It is expected that women should take charge of their family nutrition to ensure their family, especially children takes the appropriate balance diets.

“Food doesn’t have to be very expensive, why is important is that the right proportion should be taken.

“Over 2200 homes in the state have benefited from this programme and it will be a continuous one,” she said.

The Commissioner said over 200 participants at the programme were given nutritional packs which contains, egg, beans, chicken palm oil, vegetable oil and semovita.

Mr Olusola Malomo, a nutritionist at the Ajeromi General Hospital, advised participants to embrace good eating habits to stay healthy.

“You don’t need to spend huge amount of money to eat food that are nutritional.

“You should inculcate more fruits and vegetables in your daily consumption and shun unhealthy food,” he said.

Some of the beneficiaries who spoke to newsmen commended Lagos State Government for organising the programme.

Mrs Rofiat Kareem, a trader said she would make change her eating habits to maintain good health.

“With this programme I will be able to make the right choice of food when eating and reduce the proportion of my food intake,” she said.

Also, Mrs Joy Johnson, a trader, said she was now well informed on the benefits of eating healthy food.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the participants also benefitted from free medical checkup which include a free cervical screening.
