The registered trustees of the Methodist Church, Nigeria, as well as four other people, are being sued by Very Rev. Uchenna Michael Ugorie, a Methodist Church Nigeria priest.

The priest is demanding that he be reinstated to complete his single five-year tenure as Rector of Methodist Theological Institute, Umuahia, which he said started on 22/5/2020.

In a suit marked HU/188M/2024 filed at Abia State High Court 3, Umuahia, Ugorie lamented that he was ejected from the MTI’s official quarters through a letter written by the Secretary to the Conference, Rt. Rev. Babatunde Abiodun Taiwo, which ordered him to hand over to an acting Rector, Very Rev. Kingsley Nwaike, and proceed on compulsory leave on June 20, 2024, without prior notice.

Ugorie added that the authorities of the Methodist Church Nigeria brought some allegations against him even when no witness testified against him before a panel that was set up by the church to investigate him.

The applicant alleged that he was humiliated and thrown out of the official quarters of the Theological Institute in Umuahia without being given the opportunity to say anything.

When the matter was called up for hearing on Wednesday, the Counsel to the five respondents, J.O. Johnson, objected to a motion brought by the Counsel to the applicant, Obike Onyemere.

But the presiding judge, Justice A. U. Agwu, adjourned the matter to May 6, 2025, to listen to any objection that may come from the respondents’ counsel and for proper hearing of the matter.

It would be recalled that Ugorie in October 2024, during a press conference, alleged that his family took refuge inside a classroom in Umuchime Osah, Umuahia North LGA, following his abrupt removal from office and the family’s ejection from staff quarters by authorities of the Methodist Church.

The maker of the contentious film Gangs of Lagos and the well-known entertainment giant Amazon have been ordered by the Lagos State High Court to apologize to Lagos natives who are members of the Isale Eko Descendants Union (IDU) for distorting their cultural history and customs.

The Lagos State High Court also upheld the terms of settlement entered into by IDU, Amazon, and 11 other defendants.

DAILY POST recalls that the controversial movie Gangs of Lagos, which was released in April 2023, portrays the thuggery and violent lifestyle of some parts of Lagos, touching on Lagos politics and revealing the greater weight behind street power.

Expressing displeasure, the state government, through its Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Uzamat Akinbile-Yussuf, tagged the movie as a mockery of Lagos heritage.

Also expressing displeasure, the Isale Eko Descendants Union (IDU), in a lawsuit, demanded N10 billion in damages from the film producer and Amazon.

Reacting to the suit, Amazon argued that Lagos State lacked the constitutional power to censor films produced within its territory and asked the court to dismiss the suit.

However, in its ruling on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, Justice Idowu Alakija of the Lagos High Court ordered an unreserved apology to be tendered to the applicants, stating that the Gangs of Lagos movie erroneously portrayed the cultural heritage and traditions of the Isale Eko people.

The court also ordered the 12th respondent, Amazon, to issue a letter recognizing the applicants’ position that the film titled Gangs of Lagos erroneously portrayed and disparaged the cultural heritage of the well-respected Eyo Masquerade and the long-standing traditions of the Isale Eko people, and shall therein apologize to the applicants in this regard.

Reacting to the judgment, IDU Chairman Adeniyi Kazeem, SAN, expressed his pleasure that the union was able to protect the inalienable cultural rights of the communities.

“Today is a great day for the Isale Eko community of Lagos State, all Lagos indigenous communities, and Lagosians generally. Today, the relatively small community of Isale Eko was able to establish that, along with other rights, there are inalienable cultural rights that accrue to indigenous communities that need to be vigorously protected.”

When the case against the artist resumed on Wednesday after his earlier arraignment on Feb. 20, the prosecution told the court that it would be a waste of the court’s time to hear the case of Portable and that of his workers separately.

Mr. Timileyin Oredein, Senior State Counsel, told the court that Portable’s case had a sister case, which needed to be merged before the trial begins.

Oredein reminded the court that the musician and nine of his workers were earlier arraigned on Feb. 6 on similar charges.

He said that it would be time-wasting if the defendants were tried separately.

Oredein prayed the court to give a short date for the charges to be merged and substituted.

Portable and his workers were arraigned on a five-count charge of conspiracy, assault, unlawful obstruction while armed with cutlasses and a gun, and conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace.

They were also arraigned for allegedly assaulting three officials of the Ogun State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development.

Wale Ogunsanmi, 42, has been placed under detention by an Osogbo magistrate court for reportedly fatally stabbing Shina Olaribigbe, the founder of Rapture Empowerment International Church and a bishop.

The Osun State Police Command, through its Criminal Investigation Department, CID, arraigned Ogunsanmi on a single count of murder.

According to the charge sheet, marked MoS/19c/2025 and signed by B. Adaraloye, the head of the legal/prosecution section of the state CID, the crime occurred on January 1, 2025, at approximately 8:55 p.m. in the Fan Milk area of Ajegunle, Osogbo.

The charge reads: “That you, Wale Ogunsanmi, on the 1st of January, 2025, at about 8:55 p.m., at Fan Milk Area of Ajegunle, Osogbo, in the Osogbo Magisterial District, did unlawfully stab one Shina Olaribigbe to death and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 319 of the Criminal Code, Cap 33, Volume 1, Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2002.”

The court did not take the defendant’s plea due to lack of jurisdiction.

Presiding Magistrate A. O. Odeleye ordered Ogunsanmi to be remanded in Ilesa Correctional Centre pending further proceedings and adjourned the case.

DAILY POST had earlier reported that Ogunsanmi allegedly attacked the bishop after finding him in the company of his estranged wife.

The suspect’s wife, an interpreter at the deceased’s church, had reportedly been separated from Ogunsanmi for a year due to marital disputes.

Yemisi Opalola, the spokesperson for the Osun State Police Command, said, “The bishop was in the woman’s residence when her husband arrived and stabbed him several times. It is believed the suspect acted out of suspicion that the pastor was having an affair with his wife.”

Opalola also confirmed that Ogunsanmi and his wife had been living apart for about a year.

The bishop had reportedly been involved in mediating before the separation.

On the night of the incident, Ogunsanmi allegedly broke into his wife’s house and attacked the bishop, who was in the bedroom.

Police from the Dugbe Division had arrived promptly at the scene, arrested the suspect, and recovered the weapon.

The deceased’s body was deposited at the UNIOSUN Teaching Hospital Mortuary, Osogbo, for an autopsy.

Ademilua Oni, 52, was remanded by an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ekiti State on Tuesday in connection with the suspected murder of his mother.

The defendant, whose address was not provided, is being tried for murder.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp Elijah Adejare, informed the court that the defendant committed the offence on December 15, at Iropora-Ekiti in Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government Area of Ekiti State.

Adejare said that the defendant murdered his 92-year-old mother, Comfort Oni.

The prosecutor added that while the defendant went to steal, the deceased challenged him over the act, adding that in the process, he (defendant) pushed the deceased, after which she fell down and died.
According to him, the offence contravenes Section 234 of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.
He urged the court to remand the defendant in prison custody, pending legal advice from the office of Director of Public Prosecution, DPP.

The court did not, however, take the plea of the defendant.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs. Kehinde Awosika, ordered the remand of the defendant in the correctional centre, pending issuance of legal advice.

She, thereafter, adjourned the case till January 30, 2025, for mention.

The Nigeria Police Force, or NPF, has accused a lawyer of criminal defamation. The pan-Yoruba socio-cultural and socio-political group Afenifere has urged Nigerians to let the courts decide the case fairly.

The charges followed the complaint lodged at the Ekiti Police Command by a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and elder statesman, Chief Afe Babalola, alleging that the content of the 104-page book, ‘Nigeria and its Criminal Justice’ authored by Farotimi defamed him.

DAILY POST reports that while the petitioner lives in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State, the author, Farotimi, lives in Lagos where he was arrested and immediately moved to Ekiti.

The petitioner is of the view that the book which recently went viral can be read anywhere in the world, including Ekiti State where he resides, therefore, damaging his reputation.

Farotimi, a popular Nigerian activist was on Monday, arraigned before a Magistrate Court in Ado Ekiti.

The presiding judge, Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun declined his bail request and remanded him in prison custody until December 10.

A cross section of Nigerians have concluded plans to stage a mega protest in Lagos State, the Federal Capital Territory and Ekiti State on December 10 to demand his immediate release.

However, according to the National Publicity Secretary of Afenifere, Comrade Jare Ajayi, “the legal system provides an opportunity for parties in a dispute to prove their cases.”

Afenifere was of the strong opinion that the interests of both parties and the general public “must be protected and justice dispensed fairly.”

Ajayi, in a statement, added that “the court is in the best position to determine how these interests are protected, and to ensure that the prosecution is conducted in a manner that better serves the interest of justice.”

Afenifere enjoined all parties to avoid statements and actions that may lead to a breach of peace, while calling on the government to ensure a total observance of the rule of law.

Afenifere was of the view that the appropriate forum to determine whose rights had been breached and how was the court of law as established by the Nigerian constitution.

“We enjoin all parties to conduct themselves in total submission to and respect for the rule of law”, the spokesman added.

In his testimony against Godwin Emefiele, the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, the seventh prosecution witness, Mr. John Adetola, claimed to have collected $400,000 on Emefiele’s behalf.

Adetola, who identified himself as an Executive Assistant to Emefiele, also disclosed how he handed over the money to his boss, Emefiele.

He gave the testimony on Thursday while answering questions from the counsel to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Mr Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN.

He told the trial judge, Justice Rahman Oshodi that the functions of his office includes managing office correspondences, attending to visitors and any other tasks as assigned by his boss.

He said these duties gave him direct access to Emefiele.

On the $400,000, Adetola testified that he was summoned from Ekiti, his new posting place to go pick up the money.

“In 2018, I can’t remember the date, the personal assistant to the CBN Gov in Abuja, Mr Eric Odoh sent me a message on WhatsApp that I should go and collect $400,000 from John Ayoh, the former director of ICT Dept. and give same to the former CBN Governor when he came to Lagos.

“I went to the house of John Ayoh at Lekki in Lagos. He gave me an envelope and I came back to the office, I gave it to the former CBN Governor,” he said

He said he communicated with Emefiele, mentioning some of Emefiele’s family members.

“I communicate with the former CBN Governor through telephone, office line, email and verbal communication.

“I know Mr. George, I know Mr Okanta. They are Mr Emefiele’s brothers. I know his wife, Mrs Margaret Emefiele. I also know the second defendant, Henry Omoile, he lived in Emefiele’s house in Lagos,” he added.

Adetola also told the court that the EFCC accessed his phone which had some office documents and he was questioned on them, after which they printed the documents.

He identified some of the documents showing his communication with John Ayoh and Odoh, stressing that he endorsed the documents as being printed from his mobile phone.

The EFCC prosecutor, Mr Oyedepo thereafter sought the permission of the court to tender the bundle of documents.

The counsel to Emefiele, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Olaleko Ojo, raised objections to the admissibility of the documents but withdrew his objections when the counsel insisted that it was merely for identification purposes.

Counsel representing Emefiele’s co-defendant, Henry Omoile, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Adeyinka Kotoye, however, maintained his objections to the admissibility of the documents stating that the documents had no basis in law.

In his response, Oyedepo insisted that the documents were relevant and would prove essential ingredients of the offence.

He insisted on tendering it for the purpose of identification.

After considering all the submissions, Justice Oshodi admitted the documents and marked it as for the purpose of identification.

He adjourned the case till December 10 for the cross examination of the witness.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Inspector Edet Ekpo, informed the court that the defendant committed the offences with some others still at large, on October 5 at about 2.30 pm at Mosafejo in the Aradagun area of Badagry, Lagos.

Ekpo said that the defendant stole 10 bags of rice from a shop belonging to the complainant, Mr Michael Oyediji, adding that the defendant was caught by security guards, who handed him over to the police.

The suit, brought by human rights activist Abubakar Dahiru, aims to probe Matawalle’s alleged involvement in the operations of bandits during his tenure as governor.

The suit, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1434/2024, lists President Bola Tinubu, the Attorney General of the Federation, and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) as the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd defendants, respectively.

Dahiru, represented by his lawyer Ojonimi Apeh, is asking the court to declare that President Tinubu must direct the IGP to investigate the activities of bandits and kidnappers in Zamfara State, with a specific focus on allegations surrounding Matawalle’s role in the crisis.
