NHRC begins training of Police officers on Human Rights standards

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has this Wednesday morning commenced a 2-day training of Police Personnel on mainstreaming human rights into law enforcement in Nigeria.

The training is being organised by the NHRC, in conjunction with the Human Rights Institute and funded by Mcarthur Foundation.

In his welcome address, the Executive Secretary of the NRHC, Mr Tony Ojukwu (SAN) who was represented by his Special Assistant, Benedict Agu, said the whole essence of the training was to sensitize Police Personnel to the on the challenges of carrying out their statutory duties in compliance with the Human Rights requirements.

He commended the NIgeria Police for making personal available for the training, saying the Police has the most critical roles in law enforcement in the country and therefore the need to regularly bring officers and men to speed on Human Rights issues.

In her remark, Mrs Ifeoma Wakama, Project Director, Human Rights Institute, said the training was meant to remind Police Personnel of the need to always adhere to human rights standards in carrying their duties.

By that she said, the work of law enforcement would be better appreciated by the public, police authorities and government in general.

She said that the training is ongoing nationwide and have taken place Lago’s, Ilorin and other cities for various zones, adding that the one commenced today at NHRC’s office is for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

In his remark, ACP Bawa Saleh, head of criminal investigation department of the Plateau State Police Command who is also in charge of the Command’s human rights desk, thanked the NHRC for the training.

He promised that participants are ready to approach the training with open mind in oder to have the full benefits from the expertise of resource person.

Participants were drawn from Benue, Nasarawa, Plateau, FCT, Kogi and other states.
