Residents of Gonin Gora area, located along Rock Road Kaduna were shocked Wednesday afternoon as about 15 young men identified as Yahoo boys fought with dangerous weapons over sharing of proceeds of their criminal activities.
Some resident who spoke to our correspondent in Kaduna said the incident happened at around 12.05pm Wednesday less than 100 meters to the outstation of the Department of State Security (DSS) in the area.
One of the residents said people living in the area were shocked that in spite of the commotion and noise generated by the fight as well as injuries sustained by some of the suspected criminals, DSS operatives, some of who were outside their office watching the ugly development, refused to control the situation or arrest the hoodlums as the people expected.
He said that even when some people went to the office of the DSS to report the matter, the operatives just said ‘they have heard,’ but could not take any action.
According to one of the community residents- “It was 12 Noon and I went out to pick a bike. But instead of taking the bike I saw some guys fighting. So I decided to check what was happening as residents were running helter-skelter. Behold, see these yahoo boys fighting on the road. People were running. We thought it was another religious conflict.
“However, some people brazed the commotion, walked into the premises of the DSS as some of the operatives were outside, obviously watching the troubling situation. When they called the attention of the DSS operatives, they just said ‘we have heard,’ but did not take any action.
The boys were armed with knifes, bottles and cutlasses and inflicted injuries on themselves. They were more than 15 in number with tattoo all over their hands,” he said.
Attempt by our correspondent to enter the DSS office for clarification and get their own side of the story was resisted by two officers manning the gate. The Yahoo boys later entered a tinted bus and drove out of the community as the people who watched the scene expressed shock at the development.
