Many people are said to have sustained various degrees of injury Saturday when suspected rival cult groups engaged in open confrontation around Zik Avenue in Awka, Anambra State.
The clash which involved sporadic gunshots forced residents around the area to run for safety.
Confirming the incident, the state police command spokesman, Tochukwu Ikenga, said the police patrol team had intensified activity within the area and the entire Awka.
He said, “Following the sound of gunshots at Zik Avenue, Awka, police patrol has been intensified in Awka. Preliminary information revealed that the cause of the shooting is as a result of cult-related incident/clash.
“The situation is closely monitored and further development shall be communicated.”
