Afghanistan-Taliban crisis Live Updates: Most Afghans are unable to leave their homeland and those who may be in danger “have no clear way out”, the United Nations refugee agency said on Friday. “The vast majority of Afghans are not able to leave the country through regular channels,” Shabia Mantoo, spokesperson of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, UNHCR said during a media briefing.

Earlier today, a NATO official told news agency Reuters that more than 18,000 people have been flown out of Kabul since the Taliban took over Afghanistan’s capital. Thousands of people, desperate to flee the country, were still thronging the airport, the official who declined to be identified told the news agency, even though the Taliban have urged people without legal travel documents to go home.

Earlier today, the Taliban has urged unity ahead of Friday prayers, the first since they seized power, calling on imams to persuade people not to leave Afghanistan amid the chaos at the airport, protests, and reports of violence. At least 12 people have died in and around Kabul since the Taliban took over the capital city on Sunday, according to a Reuters report.
