Amaechi tenders last minute resignation ahead of Monday deadline

In what appears like a reluctant submission to an inevitable but unpredictable fate, the Minister for Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi Monday rendered his resignation from President Muhammadu Buhari’s cabinet to beat deadline.

President Buhari had last week directed that all appointees seeking elective political office in the 2023 general election should vacate their office before midnight of Monday.

In his letter addressed to the President, dated Monday May 16, 2022, Amaechi said it was regrettable for him to exit his office at this time. He also reeled out-what he sees as some of his achievements.

Amaechi is leaving office to seek the president’s position while scores of citizens who were abducted by terrorists after bombing a train going to Kaduna from Abuja in March this year are still in captivity.

The terrorists had attacked the train, killing many travelers while taking others hostage. They later said that the government have been told of what needs to be done before the hostages can be released.

Read Amaechi’s resignation letter to Buhari:

“Your Excellency

Letter of Resignation

It is with mixed feelings that I tender my resignation as the Minister of Transportation of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to contest for the Presidential ticket of our great party, the All Progressives Congress.

Your Excellency, it has been a great honour and privilege serving as a member of your cabinet following your historic victory at the polls in 2015. Under your administration, the Ministry of Transportation has recorded significant achievements, made possible by your visionary support and commitment to ensuring that we deliver on our mandate.

As I embark on the next phase of our mission to work towards a better Nigeria for ALL NIGERIANS, I humbly seek Your Excellency’s prayers, blessings and look towards your continuous support and guidance.

Your Excellency, whilst humbly seeking your kind consideration of my request please accept the assurances of my highest esteem.”

Yours Sincerely,

Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi
Honourable Minister, Federal Ministry of Transportation.
