A student-teacher has been arrested by the Ogun State police command for allegedly hurting and causing the loss of an 11-year-old student’s right eye.
The victim, Alao Idera, is a primary six student of Owiwi Nursery and Primary School in Obada Oko area of the State.
DAILY POST reports that the teacher, Adeola Adeyemo, is a 400-level student of Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijebu Ode, undergoing her teaching practice programme at the school.
Recall that in October, Monday Arijo, an SS2 student of Obada Grammar school in Obada, Idi-emi, area of the state died after a teacher identified Azamdjo Elijah, allegedly flogged him 24 strokes of the cane and asked him to perform 162 frog jumps.
Following the incident, the teacher was arrested and the school shut down by the state government
Confirming the incident to DAILY POST on Tuesday, the police spokesperson, Omolola Odutola said Adeyemo was allegedly holding a cane in the classroom when the primary six pupil rushed toward her and the cane accidentally pierced her right eye.
Odutola stated that the victim’s wounded eye was surgically removed after being sent to the Federal Medical Centre in Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, for treatment.
She stated, “The child was immediately taken to the Federal Medical Centre in Abeokuta for treatment.
“Following this complaint, the teacher, Adeola Adeyemo, a 400-level student from Tai Solarin University in Ijebu Ode who was on teaching practice, was swiftly arrested and is currently being interrogated.”
Odutola clarified that unlike Arijo, the teacher did not flog the student nor did the student do anything wrong,
She said, “it was simply a situation where the teacher, preparing for an end-of-year party, was holding a cane, as teachers often do.
“However, when the student rushed toward her, the cane accidentally caused injury to the student’s eye.
“The 11-year-old primary six student underwent surgery at the Federal Medical Centre, where her right eye was removed.”
According to Odutola, after realizing that the student’s right eye had been removed, the teacher attempted suicide but was quickly rushed to the hospital where she is currently stable.
