The Lagos State governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has appealed to individuals, institutions and organisations to support corps members to serve their fatherland and make positive impact during service year.
Sanwo-Olu made the call on Thursday at the closing ceremony of the orientation exercise for the 2023 Batch ‘C’, Stream 2 members, at National Youth Service Corps Orientation Camp, Iyana-Ipaja, Lagos.
Two sexagenarians are among the members of the batch, who would proceed for their primary assignments after the orientation.
Sanwo-Olu urged the new corps members to exhibit lessons of discipline, perseverance and teamwork learnt during the orientation course, as ambassadors of the scheme.
“ I call on all Lagosians, institutions and organisations to accord our young vibrant and energetic compatriots a warm welcome, let us give them the support and encouragement that they will require to enjoy a memorable service year.
“ As you bid farewell to the orientation camp and proceed to your various Primary Assignments, you must recognise the significance of this programme in fostering national unity.
“ The orientation camp has been a microscopic representation of Lagos State, a melting pot of cultures, languages, traditions and as you have experienced firsthand, the strength that comes from diversity.
“ I am confident that you will carry this understanding with you as you contribute to the development of Lagos State and Nigeria at large.
“ Remember that the road ahead is illuminated with possibilities and you have been equipped with new skills, perspectives and determination to create a positive impact,” he added.
Sanwo-Olu was represented at the event by Mr Ibukun Dosumu, Director, General Services, Lagos State Ministry of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Relations.
Earlier, Mrs Yetunde Baderinwa, the State Coordinator, National Youth Service Corps, Lagos, advised the corps members to serve the nation with all commitment enshrined in the oath of allegiance.
Speaking on posting, Baderinwa enjoined the corps members to accept their letters to various places of primary assignment in good faith.
“Learn to take responsibilities and life more seriously.
“You must note that the service year is a transition into adulthood, do not engage in illicit acts but invest your time in profitable endeavours.
“Obey rules and be law-abiding citizens as the NYSC will not shield you if you engage in any criminal activities.
“ We do not have any other place to call our own, we must strive to make Nigeria a better place to be and we must be deliberate about it,” she said.
The NYSC Lagos coordinator noted that the 2023 Batch ‘C’ Stream 2 had two corps members who were above 60 years.
She said that one of them was passionately engaged with tasks in the camp kitchen.
Some members of staff and corps members who distinguished themselves during the three weeks orientation programme were recognised and given certificates.
