Popular Nigerian afrobeat singer, Seun Kuti has given reason why he assaulted a police officer, saying the man wanted to kill him and family members.
The singer was seen in a viral video Saturday where he slapped the policeman after raining abuses on him.
Consequently, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) ordered his arrest for the offense.
The order for his arrest was contained in a statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi on Saturday.
“The IGP has equally ordered a speedy and full investigation into the remote and immediate cause(s) of the assault and prosecution of the suspect accordingly.
“IGP Usman Alkali Baba assures Nigerians that acts of contempt/disdain for symbols of authority will not be tolerated while offenders of such hideous crimes will be surely brought to book,” he said.
In his reaction to the order for his arrest, the singer said the policeman tried to kill him and his family and that he had apologised.
He said he had agreed not to press charges against him because he apologised, saying he had proof to show for his action.
Kuti said he welcomed investigation into the matter by the police and that he would give his full cooperation.
“He tried to kill me and my family. I have the proof but I no dey chase clout. He apologised and I have agreed not to press charges. Make una mind una business make the poor guy no go lose him job.
“I welcome the investigation and will give my full cooperation. I also pray to the IG that whoever is wrong should be indicted,” he said.
