TheSenator-Elect for Anambra North district, Dr. Tony Nwoye is to receive Certificate of Return from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), today, Wednesday, March 7, 2023.
To emerge victorious, Nwoye, a Medical Doctor by profession and former House of Representative Member defeated big names like former Aviation Minister, Sen. Stella Oduah and Mrs Ebelechukwu Obiano, wife of immediate past governor of Amnambra State.
While declaring Dr Nwoye winner of the election, the INEC Returning Officer for Anambra North, Prof. Kingsley Ubaorji of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, stated that LP candidate scored 94,779 votes to defeat Oduah of Peoples Democratic Party who got 50,146 votes and Mrs Obiano who got 48,212 votes to place third.
Also to receive Certificate of Return are 97 other senators-elect who emerged victorious from the February 25 national assembly elections conducted across Nigeria.
While the ruling party won 57 senate seats at the February 25 presidential and national assembly elections, the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won 29, Labour Party got six, New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and Social Democratic Party (SDP) got two each, just as All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and Young Progressive Party (YPP) got one seat each.
For the House of Representatives, the APC garnered 162 from the 360 seats in the House of Representatives , PDP got 102, LP, 34 seats, NNPP 18, APGA four, SPD and ADC got two each, while YPP won one seat.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had earlier stated that the newly elected Senators and House of Representatives members will be issued their Certificates of Return at the International Conference Centre (ICC) Abuja on Tuesday and Wednesday.
This was made known on Saturday by the INEC Chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu, while speaking at a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) in Abuja.
He stated that new members of the Red Chambers will get theirs certificate on Tuesday, while those at the Green Chambers will receive theirs on Wednesday this week.
