60 prisoners in Sokoto State’s prisons have been released after paying their fines thanks to the efforts of Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, who represents the Sokoto-North Senatorial District.

The freed inmates, who had been convicted of minor offenses such as theft and fighting, also received N10,000 each for transport back to their homes.

Speaking at the occasion on Wednesday, the Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice of Sokoto State, Barrister Nasiru Binji, described the gesture as “laudable and commendable.”

“This is the kind of support we need, especially considering the congested nature of our correctional centers,” he stated.

Binji, who was represented by Barrister Umar Aliyu, further emphasized the significance of the intervention, given the recent outbreak of meningitis in some parts of the state.

“This act of kindness came at the right time. Our correctional facilities are overcrowded, and with the prevailing health challenges, such support is highly valuable. We appeal to other wealthy individuals to follow his example,” he added.

Also speaking at the event, Barrister Rashidat Muhammad, Chairperson of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Sokoto Chapter, hailed the initiative as a “dream come true” for the legal association, which has been advocating alternative sentencing for minor offenses.

“So this exercise aligns perfectly with our advocacy for community service in place of imprisonment for lesser crimes, as well as the settlement of fines for those who cannot afford to pay,” she said.

She noted that the gesture was particularly significant as it came during the holy month of Ramadan, allowing the freed inmates to reunite with their families in time for the Sallah celebrations.

“For the fact that this happened in Ramadan, it means these individuals are not only freed but will now celebrate Sallah with their families at home. This brings great joy to the NBA,” she added.
