2 dead, 37 rescued in Garki building collapse

At least 2 persons lost their lives, while 37 others have been rescued from the scene of a collapsed building at the popular Lagos street in Garki.

Confirming the development to journalists in Abuja, the Director General of Federal Emergency Management Agency, Dr Abbass Iddriss, said the affected persons have been evacuated to various medical facilities in Abuja.

The two storey building, which served both residential and commercial purposes, collapsed late Wednesday night.

According to the DG, “37 persons have so far been rescued and evacuated to hospital, others reportedly still trapped. The rescue team and others are on the ground. Rescue operations on but slowly due to ongoing rains.

“They are making frantic efforts at getting an excavator to remove people from the rubble.”

The DG commended the efforts of all stakeholders working hard manually to rescue trapped persons, including members of the community.

He revealed that rescue mission have continued while they await the arrival of equipment to enhance the operations.

A combined team of the FCT Emergency Management Agency, Federal Road Safety Corps, FCT Police Command, and the VIO were on the ground to carrying out rescue operations when our reporter visited the scene Thursday morning.
